Circular Economy in Action – Precious Plastic Project with Lebenshilfe e.V.

Circular Economy in Action: The Precious Plastic Project by Gaia Protection and Lebenshilfe e.V.

Plastic, once hailed as a marvel of modern innovation, has become a ubiquitous part of our lives. It’s in our plastic bags, smartphones, and car dashboards. Yet, the sobering reality is that nearly half of all plastic products become waste in less than a month. This staggering waste poses a significant threat to our environment and our future.

But there is hope on the horizon, a vision for a more sustainable world where plastic is not a problem but a part of the solution. Learn more about my project with my NGO Gaia Protection and Lebenshilfe—an initiative that’s turning the tide on plastic pollution and leading the way toward a circular economy.

The Vision of Gaia Protection

At the heart of our project is the belief that we can create a sustainable recycling system and cultivate long-term awareness in our society. By working together with schools, a group of people with special needs and the local government, we can truly close the circle and explore the untapped potential of plastic as a valuable raw material that should never be relegated to disposable waste.

Turning Plastic Waste into Treasure

Germany has a well-developed waste management system, and waste incineration is a part of it. Waste-to-energy incineration plants are used to dispose of certain types of waste, including municipal solid waste (MSW) that cannot be easily recycled or composted. These facilities are equipped with advanced technologies to minimize environmental impact and generate energy from the combustion process.

However, the exact amount of waste being incinerated in Germany can vary over time, depending on factors such as waste generation rates, recycling efforts, and changes in waste composition. The aim is to reduce the amount of waste sent to incineration and landfills by increasing recycling and circularity from its beginning.

The core of this project lies in the strategisch workshops we give in several schools in Bamberg and the collaboration with Lebenshilfe e.V. We make use of a shredder and injector machine that shredds plastic into small pieces and then prints it into different molds.  The result? Useful carabiners, rulers, a keychain campaign, and much more to explore.

When the machines are not used for workshops in schools, they are operating at Lebenshilfe, where they provide interesting and sustainable job opportunities for people with special needs.

A Sustainable Future with Community Support

The project’s financial support came from the “Mobility, Climate, and Environment” fund of the city of Bamberg, a generous donation from the Hand in Hand support association of Lebenshilfe Bamberg e.V., and Gaia Protetcion.

Beyond creating recycled treasures, Gaia Protection also uses these machines for educational workshops at Festivals, consulting for firms and special requests.

Join the Revolution

At the kickoff event, guests from various sectors, including politics, administration, and academia, got a hands-on experience with the machines. They discovered firsthand how easy it is to create their own recycled products, a testament to the accessibility and potential of the Precious Plastic Project.

As the project continues to grow and expand its reach, it serves as a shining example of how circular economy principles can be put into action. It’s not just a project; it’s a movement—a movement towards a world where plastic waste is a thing of the past and a circular, sustainable future is within our grasp.

We are looking for more strategic partners, schools, distribution channels and anyone who would like to join this beautiful journey of circular economy!
